Canine Myofunctional Therapy

What is Canine Myofunctional Therapy?

Canine Myofunctional Therapy is a combination of Myotherapy, remedial massage and rehabilitation exercises for dogs.
The treatment is suitable for all dog breeds and back grounds. Great and small, old and young!
Dogs can get tight, sore and injured muscles in the same way as people. Weather they are a competing dog or a pet.
They run, play and jump up and down from different objects and sometimes it can lead to imbalances in the muscles and they become tight and if it is left untreated it can lead to an injury.

Muscle tightness and injuries

Dogs are very physical and active by nature and it's very easy for them to over use the body from pure excitement.
Injuries can occur from a repetitive movement pattern like jumping in and out of a car, on and off the couch, running up and down stairs and fetching.
When the muscles get overused and fatigued and used in an unbalanced way the muscle fibres get tight and sore and soon the body will start to compensate with other muscles to continue movement which eventually will lead to an injury
Canine Myofunctional Therapy will increase the blood flow to the muscles and separate the muscle fibres so oxygen and nutrients can allow the muscles to heal. It also stimulates the lymphatic system which will help remove toxins from the muscles.
The treatment focuses on balancing the muscles so the dog can move freely and fluently in proper alignment.

Arthiritis

In elderly dogs Arthritis can be a common problem where Canine Myofunctional Therapy can be helpful to assist in the maintenance of keeping the joints and muscles mobile and reduce pain. Arthritis is degeneration and inflammation of the joints. And it will cause pain and stiffness in the joints and the surrounding muscles.
Canine Myofunctional Therapy can assist in prolonging the effects of arthritis by loosing the muscles around the joints and incorporate stretching and rehabilitation exercises to increase mobility and flexibility.

Stress and anxiety

Dogs can also suffer from stress, anxiety and general general nervousness.
A relaxing remedial massage will stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which will release relaxing hormones in the body and encourage a calmer mind and body for the dog. With regular treatments the overall stress level will decrease and the dog and will feel more harmonious and balanced.

Post Surgery Rehabilitation

The recovery from a surgery can cause your dog to be immobilized for several weeks. The lack of movement will not only reduce muscle strength and flexibility but also can lead to muscle wastage (atrophy). When the dog starts to move again it will compensate with muscles on the opposite side of the surgery which will lead to muscle imbalance.
Remedial massage and rehabilitation exercises will be very beneficial to assist in the recovery from surgery by increasing blood circulation to the muscles which provides the muscles with nutrients and oxygen to allow healing to take place. The increase of lymphatic flow will help get rid of the build up of toxins from the anaesthetic and medications administered at the surgery.
The lack of mobility during the recovery can also affect the dogs mental health which the remedial massage will help stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and release some happy hormones for the dog.
Canine Myofunctional Therapy  will get your fury friend back to it's happy and healthy normal self in a quicker and safer way with remedial massage, rehabilitation exercises, balancing proprioception exercises and stretching.
